A special meeting place for
MEDIA AND ADVERTISING VETERANS!
ARIZONA SURVIVORS
Pat Poulson

by Marlene Klotz-Collins

With a heavy heart I share with you that Pat Poulson lost his extraordinarily courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday evening.

Pat was part of the advertising community for six decades. He began his career at The Arizona Republic and The Phoenix Gazette as a lifeguard at the Lazy R&G Ranch, the paper’s country club-like employee recreational facility, teaching multiple hundreds how to swim. He went on to become the promotion director in Bill Shover’s Community & Corporate Services department, a position he held for three decades.

His creative talents were evident in countless ways but probably none more than his trail-blazing multi-media presentations first produced during an era when two projectors with a dissolve unit were considered sophisticated. Many may recall the newspapers’ “Inside Phoenix” publication introduced first at an annual luncheon presentation at the Westward Ho and then years later at Symphony Hall. His work was legendary in the newspaper industry.

Maurie Helle remembers his leadership in the Phoenix Junior Advertising Club. “Someone asked me to run against Pat for Governor of the regional District 12 … not a chance.” Maurie, Karen DeWall, Bill Miller, Mary Keltner, Sandy Cowen, Larry Popkin, Marty Laurel, Mike Osborn were among the early members of PJAC who are among the mainstays of today’s Survivors.

Even as Pat battled despicable cancer for the last seven years, he continued to volunteer his writing and production skills to his church and countless nonprofits. The depth and sphere of his influence impacted countless numbers.

Pat’s beloved significant other of 35 years, Doris McVey, a nurse and retired executive of the Banner Health System, was at his side lovingly caring for him throughout the duration of his battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Those wishing to reach out to Doris: 1535 West Vernon, Phoenix 85007.
